January 11, 2024 (KHARTOUM) – The UN Secretary-General spoke with the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to discuss the nearly nine-month conflict in Sudan and identify avenues for de-escalating the situation.

In a statement released Thursday, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo “Hemetti” said he received a telephone call from Antonio Guterres, a week before a meeting the IGAD plan to hold on the Sudanese crisis.

“I shared with Mr Guterres our vision for stopping the war and initiating negotiations to address the root causes of the conflict, leading to the reconstruction of the Sudanese state on new and just foundations that achieve security, stability, and comprehensive and lasting peace,” he stated in Arabic.

He also welcomed the appointment of Ramatane Lamamra as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan and reaffirmed his commitment to cooperate fully with Lamamra and all UN agencies to address the dire humanitarian conditions in the areas under RSF control.

The office of the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General has not yet issued a statement on the discussion between the RSF leader and UN chief.

Lamamra is expected to participate in the first direct meeting brokered by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) between Sudanese army commander-in-chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Hemetti on January 18.

On Thursday, Lamamra met with Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul-Gheit to explore the regional organization’s position on the Sudanese crisis. He is expected to tour the region for similar meetings about Sudan.
