President Yoweri Museveni has been elected the new chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit, that is ongoing at Munyonyo, Kampala.

Museveni takes over from President Ilham Aliye of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The seat was handed over by H.E. Jeyhun Aziz Ogu Bayramov, the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan.

In his address during the NAM summit, Museveni said the ‘resistance fighters’ of Uganda are shocked at and look down with contempt at the ‘strategic shallowness’ of some of the actors in the world who don’t respect the freedom of people, yet claim to be democratic.

“We the resistance fighters of Uganda, are flabbergasted and look down with contempt, at the philosophical, ideological and strategic shallowness of some of the actors in the World. Why not respect the freedom of everybody, if you say you are a democrat?” he said.

Museveni added: There should only be free associations of nations, of people of a common or shared origin, interacting for mutual advantage with the people of the World.

He further said that the world should concentrate on the common human problems; prosperity through trade, advance of science and technology in order to solve human problems.

“Our stand is that the World should concentrate on the common human problems ─ prosperity through trade, the advance of science and technology to deal with human problems, the environment, crime and terrorism,” he added.

President Museveni will be the chair of the Non-Aligned Movement from 2024 to 2027.
