Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Microsoft has unveiled a significant change to its keyboards, marking the most significant update in three decades with the introduction of an artificial intelligence (AI) key, as reported by the BBC on January 4.

The new AI key will provide users with access to Copilot, Microsoft’s AI tool, on the latest Windows 11 PCs. Microsoft, a major investor in OpenAI, relies on its capabilities to power Copilot’s AI features. This move follows the integration of AI into other Microsoft products such as Microsoft 365 and Bing Search in 2023. In comparison, Apple has incorporated a Siri button on its touch bar in Macbooks for several years.

Copilot supports users with various functions including searching, writing emails, and creating images. Microsoft’s executive vice president, Yusuf Mehdi, described this development as a “transformative” moment, likening it to the introduction of the Windows key almost 30 years ago. He emphasized that it would “simplify” and “amplify” the user experience.

The new keyboards featuring the Copilot key are expected to debut on new products starting February. Microsoft will showcase some of these products at the upcoming CES tech event in Las Vegas, starting next week. With Copilot integrated into Office 365 products like Word, PowerPoint, and Teams, users can benefit from capabilities such as summarizing meetings, drafting emails, and creating presentations.

Copilot has also found its way into Microsoft’s Bing search engine. While Google, the world’s largest search engine, has its AI system called Bard, it was Microsoft’s partner, OpenAI, that introduced the powerful AI tool ChatGPT in 2022, prompting rivals to hasten the release of their own versions.
