Makerere University, which welcomed its first 14-day students in 1922, is currently hosting its 74th Graduation Ceremony at the iconic Freedom Square on campus.
The university announced that a total of 132 PhDs (46 female, 86 male), 1,585 Masters (699 female, 886 male), 156 Postgraduate Diplomas (67 female, 89 male), 11,016 Undergraduate Degrees (5,990 female, 5,026 male), and 24 Undergraduate Diplomas (15 female, 9 male) will be conferred across all colleges.
Today, Makerere bestowed Honorary Doctorates upon three distinguished individuals. Prof. Leif Abrahamsson received an Honorary Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa, in recognition of his substantial contributions to the development of Mathematics in the East African region. Prof. Abrahamsson, from the Department of Mathematics at Uppsala University, initiated the Eastern African Universities Mathematics Program (EAUMP) aimed at enhancing mathematics through Master’s and PhD training. His efforts led to mathematics becoming a core program under the International Science Programme (ISP), significantly building capacity at the PhD, Masters, and Postdoc levels in the region.
Hon. Betty Oyella Bigombe was honored with an Honorary Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa. She played a pivotal role in conflict resolution in Africa, leading peace and humanitarian initiatives in northern Uganda during the 1990s as the Minister of State for Northern Uganda and later serving as the chief mediator to the conflict in the mid-2000s.
Hon. Justice Frederick Martin Stephen Egonda-Ntende was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa.
The graduation ceremony brought together dignitaries from within and beyond Uganda, celebrating the academic accomplishments of a diverse cohort across various disciplines.
The University Council highlighted that Egonda-Ntende had a significant influence on legal training and practice, achieving noteworthy professional milestones and making substantial contributions to the legal community in Uganda and beyond. His unwavering commitment to justice, coupled with a high standard of integrity, marked his career. The Council emphasized his humility, unyielding dedication to ethical principles, and outstanding contributions to the advancement of the judicial system in Uganda and on a global scale.
In accordance with university policy, the conferment of Honorary Degrees ideally requires the recipient’s physical presence, unless extraordinary circumstances are approved by the University Council.
The honorary degree, being the highest accolade bestowed by the University, symbolizes recognition of exceptional achievements that have significantly contributed to knowledge and the betterment of society.
The 74th Graduation Ceremony is scheduled to take place from Monday, January 29, to Friday, February 2, 2024, following the outlined schedule.
