Lawyers representing Molly Katanga and her family have expressed frustration as the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions sought adjournment for the tenth time, denying the suspects another opportunity for bail. The suspects, including Martha Nkwanzi Katanga, a lactating mother, have been held on remand for three months without bail.
During the proceedings at the criminal division of the High Court in Kampala, Lawyer Jet Tumwebaze stated that the applicants’ attempts to apply for bail had been frustrated by the DPP for the tenth time, both before the Magistrate and the High Court.
In response, the Prosecution argued that they needed time to ascertain the sureties and the attached documentation, claiming they had not yet received legal arguments despite serving the court.
The prosecution also mentioned that some of the sureties were ineligible, leading to a counter-debate. Katanga family lawyers urged the court to consider eligible sureties rather than subject the whole group to another adjournment.
The Court has given the applicants and their sureties until February 2, 2024, to resolve issues regarding their documents. Among the sureties are Willis Bashaasha, the State House Director of Manifesto Implementation, and Zaakye Kyamanianga, the husband to Martha Katanga.
