The Uganda Police Force has obtained CCTV footage showing the gunman who fired bullets at Pastor Aloysius Bugingo’s vehicle on January 2 in Namungoona, a Kampala suburb, killing his bodyguard, Richard Muhumuza.

According to the footage, a man wearing a black jacket and white shoes is seen using a pistol to open fire at Bugingo’s car.

It appears the shooter thought Bugingo, being the boss, was seated in the co-driver’s seat.

“The CCTV footage captured the lone gunman in action,” said a very trusted source who preferred anonymity to avoid jeopardising investigations.

“After firing several bullets, the gunman quickly hid his pistol before fleeing from the crime scene.”

The CCTV footage also shows the gunman disappearing under the cover of darkness, as people scattered to escape the shooting.

Asked if police had already identified the killer, a senior official said the footage of the shooting “is not clear enough; it is a bit grainy and of low quality.”

This partly explains why police on Monday announced a Shs 20 million bounty for any information leading to the arrest of the gunman and the recovery of the weapon without sharing the suspect’s photo.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said the law enforcement body’s “dedicated team at the Special Investigations Division has begun their work meticulously,” adding, “We’ve gathered witness statements, obtained relevant reports, accessed CCTV footage from both public and private cameras, and secured forensic and ballistic reports for evaluation.”

Senior Presidential Advisor in Charge of Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, last week urged the “law enforcement agencies to quickly investigate and bring these criminals to justice.”

He wondered, “Who are these criminals? Is it the ADF or some other shadowy group? We need answers to these questions,” he emphasised on the X platform on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.
