Arua, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Senior Procurement Officer for Yumbe district, Taban Kana, and Siraj Anule, an official of Miribe Foundation Limited, have been arrested for alleged bribery. Detectives from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) apprehended them.
Kana is accused of soliciting a bribe amounting to 23 million shillings from Emmanuel Obua, the Managing Director of Apogee Logistics Company. The alleged bribe was intended as a condition for awarding the company a contract for the construction of culverts and the rehabilitation of a 4.3 km access road for the financial year 2022/2023.
Preliminary reports suggest that the bribe was paid through a bank account under the name of Miribe Foundation Limited. Subsequently, Siraj withdrew the funds and delivered them to Kana. Records from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit indicate that 20 million shillings has been recovered from the suspects.
Josephine Angucia, the West Nile region Police spokesperson, confirmed that the suspects are currently being held at Arua Central Police Station as investigations continue.
