A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier, Bonny Ojok, was killed by unknown assailants during a raid on his mobile money outlet in Gulu city, northern Uganda. The incident occurred around 9:45 pm at Lacor trading center in Bardege-Layibi Division. Ojok, who was also a teacher at Gulu Army secondary school, was reportedly shot by two gunmen dressed in green military jackets who had disguised as customers.
Preliminary police reports suggest that the assailants stabbed Ojok after a brief scuffle and later shot him twice in the stomach. They robbed him of two mobile phones and a backpack suspected to contain an unspecified amount of money before fleeing the scene on a waiting motorcycle. Ojok was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor for emergency treatment but succumbed to the gunshot injuries.
A police team, including detectives and flying squad personnel, visited the crime scene and retrieved two cartridges for further investigation. Aswa West police spokesperson, David Ongom Mudong, cautioned mobile money operators and other businesses to be cautious, advising them to hire security guards for their safety. While no arrests have been made, Mudong stated that police are actively pursuing the assailants based on valuable information obtained from the crime scene.
This incident follows a similar attack in July, where gunmen dressed in UPDF uniforms raided a mobile money shop in Lacan Kwite Cell in Bardege-Layibi Division, resulting in the death of a mobile operator named Kenneth Olobo. The security situation for mobile money operators and businesses in the area appears to be a cause for concern, prompting calls for heightened vigilance and security measures.
