The Uganda National Bureau of Standards Engineering Materials Testing Laboratory has achieved accreditation from the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) as the SANAS Facility T1009, according to an official announcement.

The facility has received accreditation in alignment with the recognized International Standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017, outlining General Requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. This SANAS accreditation signifies that test results conducted by the UNBS Engineering Materials Testing Laboratory are internationally recognized. It provides crucial support for activities such as certification, import inspection, and the promotion of exports to external markets.

This accomplishment marks the third UNBS Laboratory to attain international accreditation, following the Food safety laboratories (the Chemistry and the Microbiology labs). This solidifies UNBS’ status as the apex standards regulatory agency in Uganda, boasting a fully furnished and functional quality assurance infrastructure.

The UNBS Engineering Materials Testing Laboratory specializes in various tests on diverse building and engineering materials, evaluating their compliance with standards. The primary objectives are to safeguard the interests of consumers and producers and assure the quality of purchased goods. This aligns with the UNBS mandate of ensuring fair trade and protecting consumers and the environment from dangerous and substandard products.

Among the materials and products subject to testing by the UNBS Engineering Materials Testing Laboratory are Cement and lime, Plain and corrugated iron sheets (galvanized and pre-painted), Reinforcement steel bars and structural steel, Burnt clay bricks, concrete blocks, and pre-cast paving blocks, among others.

For information on testing fees, the UNBS website provides details at https://unbs.go.ug//e-services/testing-fees/.

Sylvia Kirabo, the Principal Public Relations Officer at the Uganda National Bureau of Standards, encourages the business community to leverage the internationally accredited UNBS laboratories for certification. This move aims to enhance the competitiveness of Ugandan products on national, regional, continental, and international markets.
