Uganda has removed visa requirements for citizens from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as a benefit for being a member of the East African Community (EAC).
Lt Gen Joseph Musanyufu, permanent secretary of the ministry of internal affairs, says the decision was made at the 8th joint permanent commission that was held in Kinshasa, DRC, in October 2023.
“At the 8th joint permanent commission, held from October 11, 2023 to October 15, 2023, in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. The parties agreed in principle to waive visa requirements for the citizens of both countries on a reciprocal basis,” he says.
Musanyufu says the decision was made as part of the requirement of the protocol of the EAC-market-free movement of persons, that allows entry of citizens of other partners into Uganda without a visa.
“The Protocol of the establishment of the East African Community, common market-free movement of persons, mandates partner states under article 7(2)(d) to allow entry of citizens of other partner states without a visa,” he says.
The Directive will be effected on January 1, 2024, and the Government of DRC is also expected to permit Ugandan Citizens to enter DRC without Visas.
The Democratic Republic of Congo acceded to the East African Community (EAC) Treaty on April 8, 2022, and became a full member of the EAC on July 11, 2022.
