Susan Nsibirwa, a distinguished marketing professional and journalist trained at Makerere, has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Monitor Publications.
“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Susan Nsibirwa as Managing Director-MPL, effective from January 2, 2024,” said Nation Media Group (NMG) Chief Executive Officer Stephen Gitagama in a statement on Tuesday morning.
Nsibirwa takes over from Tony Glencross, who will depart the company on December 22, 2023.
It is understood that NMG did not renew Glencross’ contract, and he did not seek an extension.
Nsibirwa assumes leadership of MPL during a challenging period for the media industry, grappling with a turbulent economy marked by low copy sales and diminishing advertising revenues.
NMG has long struggled to safeguard its editorial operations from state interference.
In recent years, the company has pursued a digital-first business model to boost subscriptions for its online content and decrease reliance on traditional advertising revenues.
Nsibirwa’s role reports to the Group CEO with a dotted reporting line to the Monitor Publications Limited (MPL) Board Chairman.
“Susan will be responsible for leading MPL, The East African, and Africa Broadcasting (U) Limited (the broadcasting company that operates NTV Uganda and Spark TV) to deliver their long-term strategy, business plans, and annual performance targets, maximizing value for shareholders,” said Gitagama.
She will be joining NMG from Ayiva Consulting Solutions, where she currently serves as the managing director. Her previous roles include positions at URGE – Uganda, Vision Group, MTN Uganda, and dfcu Bank.
Nsibirwa is currently a member of the Strategy and Audit, Risk and Compliance Board Committees of Monitor Publications Limited and serves as the Board Chair at the African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME), among other boards.
She holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Nicosia, Cyprus, and a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from Makerere University.
