Sudanese journalists syndicate calls for safe corridors for civilians in Jazirah State

December 26, 2023 (WAD MADANI) – The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate urgently called upon the international community to request the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to immediately establish secure humanitarian passages for civilians and journalists stranded in perilous areas in Al-Jazirah State.

After the RSF took control of Khartoum last April, Wad Madani had become a temporary refuge for numerous Sudanese journalists associated with various newspapers and outlets. However, following the invasion of the capital of Al-Jazirah State, these journalists were forced to seek shelter in remote areas.

Accounts from both journalists and villagers have confirmed distressing incidents where RSF members descended upon these remote villages, mainly inhabited by farmers, and forcibly confiscated their vehicles and money. Moreover, civilians were prevented from leaving the state.

“Our primary concern lies in the safety of these journalists, and we are deeply saddened by the escalating turmoil affecting our nation.”

The syndicate has denounced the RSF’s “unarmed terrorism” and implored international organizations to exert pressure on the paramilitary forces to promptly and unconditionally facilitate safe passage for hundreds of thousands of women, children, and elderly civilians stranded in hazardous regions.

Sudanese political groups have criticized the looting, human rights violations, and war crimes committed by the RSF in Al-Jazirah, urging the RSF leadership to rein in its forces and take necessary measures to prevent the perpetuation of these abuses against civilians.

According to a statement from the RSF Advisory Council, the RSF has authorized the use of live bullets to eliminate “renegade” elements within the group. The statement, issued by Council head Hafez Abdel Nabi, followed the arrest of around 400 thieves and looters, as well as the detention of 100 RSF members accused of assaulting civilians, stealing their property, and resisting arrest.

Abdel Nabi stated that the RSF will not tolerate any “misbehaviour” within its ranks and that those who violate the law will face severe consequences. He also warned that the RSF would employ necessary force to safeguard the Sudanese people.
