The Uganda Police have implemented enhanced security measures ahead of the festive season to ensure the safety and security of both Ugandans and visitors. Among the measures being taken are increased patrolling in mapped areas, snap checks, and stop-and-search operations. Both armed and unarmed police officers are actively involved in these operations, according to Police spokesperson Fred Enanga.
Enanga emphasized that the heightened visibility and road policing measures are just part of comprehensive security measures aimed at maintaining peace during the festive season. The Police are reviewing their level of preparedness and assessing potential threats and vulnerabilities as Christmas and New Year approach.
While acknowledging the existing threat environment in the country, Enanga assured the public that the Police are actively reviewing preparedness levels. Joint intelligence components have profiled major installations, venues, and hotspots with potential risks. Various specialized teams, including standby teams, mobile squads, advance teams, 999 patrols, and motorcycle squads, are ready to respond to emergencies.
The Police have also deployed a mix of CCTV technology, capturing vehicle number plates and driver images. Enanga encouraged owners of private CCTV cameras to alert the Police to any signs of danger and share recorded footage.
The festive season often sees increased potential threats to national security as people engage in various recreational activities. The tightened security measures aim to ensure public safety and contribute to a successful festive season for all.
