Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | As the festive season approaches, the Police have issued a warning, urging households to exercise extra caution and heightened vigilance. Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesperson, emphasized the importance of implementing security measures around homes and businesses to prevent falling victim to criminal activities.
During a weekly press conference, Enanga advised the public to remain vigilant of their surroundings, especially considering the influx of people in towns during the Christmas and festival days. He highlighted the potential risk of criminals targeting homes whose occupants have traveled to villages for the festive season.
Enanga recommended practical security measures, such as keeping outdoor lights switched on and avoiding common hiding spots for spare keys, such as under doormats, door tops, or window tops, as criminals are aware of these tricks.
Furthermore, he called on the business community to enhance their security by employing armed guards and escorts when transporting or collecting cash. Enanga advised against carrying excessive amounts of cash, suggesting the use of ATM cards for transactions. Communication and awareness were also stressed, especially when approaching gates to prevent potential ambushes.
To ensure public safety during the festive period, the Police spokesperson announced increased patrols, visibility, and various security interventions across the country. Specialized police teams, including mobile squads, 999 patrol units, and motorcycle squads, have been deployed to respond promptly to any incidents.
Enanga reassured the public that the Police are actively reviewing and enhancing their preparedness levels. Additionally, joint intelligence efforts involving agencies such as CMI, ISO, CI, and ESO are continuously profiling venues, hotspots, and individuals posing security risks. The goal is to maintain a secure environment throughout the Christmas and festival season.
