Professor Openjuru George Ladaah, the Vice-Chancellor of Gulu University and Chairperson of the Uganda Vice-Chancellor’s Forum, has been named the Educationist of the Year by the African Leadership Magazine, according to an official press release dated December 15, 2023.

The announcement positions Prof. Openjuru as the recipient of the African Educationalist of the Year, securing an impressive 81.57 percent in the online voting poll. He is set to share the stage at the award ceremony in Ethiopia in February 2024 with other distinguished personalities, including the President of Kenya, William Ruto, President George Weah of Liberia, and former President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania. All of them emerged as winners of the 12th African Leadership Magazine (ALM) Persons of the Year Awards 2023.

The selection process involved a call for nominations and an online voting poll. In an interview with a reporter, Prof. Openjuru expressed his happiness with the recognition. He highlighted the significance of the award in motivating both himself and the university to continue excelling in the fields of education, training, management, and community transformation.

The chairman of the African Leadership Organisation and publisher of the African Leadership Magazine, Dr. Ken Giami, remarked that the winners of the 2023 ALM Persons of the Year Awards had made significant contributions to the African renaissance. He acknowledged their efforts in driving sustainable development, fostering economic growth, and promoting peace and political stability across the continent.

Dr. Giami emphasized that the winners’ sacrifices, policies, and actions had played a crucial role in bolstering regional peace and cooperation, improving healthcare and education, and laying the groundwork for substantial progress, economic growth, and human capital development across Africa.

The formal presentation of instruments of honor to the winners and runners-up is scheduled to take place during the flagship annual ALM Persons of the Year Awards ceremony on February 23, 2024, at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the African Union headquarters.
