KAMPALA | Xinhua | The death toll from a rebel attack in the western Uganda district of Kamwenge has risen to 10, according to local authorities on Tuesday.
Byarugaba Isaiah Kanyamahane, the resident district commissioner for Kamwenge, informed Xinhua over the telephone that suspected members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group, were responsible for the attack, which claimed the lives of five males and five females, all civilians.
“Last night, at about 1:00 a.m. (2200 GMT Monday), rebels attacked Kyabandara Parish of Kamwenge District, resulting in the tragic deaths of five men and five women,” said Kanyamahane, who also serves as the chairperson of the security committee in the district.
He mentioned that security forces are actively pursuing the attackers in the forested area of Kibale National Park.
Kanyamahane noted that several people were injured, although he couldn’t ascertain the exact number.
Last week, the military reported the killing of two ADF rebels and the injury of a commander in Kibale National Park. Notably, part of the forest park is situated in Kamwenge.
President Yoweri Museveni recently revealed that some rebels had infiltrated the country following intense bombardment in the neighboring eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. In that region, a joint force comprising the Uganda People’s Defense Forces and the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s military has been pursuing the rebels since 2021.
