The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Anita Among, has called on security forces to tackle the security threats being perpetrated by gun violence to ensure the socio-economic prosperity of Uganda.

She made the remarks while reacting to last week’s incident that saw Albert Cook Tugume, brother to KCCA Deputy Lord Mayor, Doreen Nyanjura, gunned down alongside Barnabas Sabiti who tried to intervene during the fatal incident.

“My young brother, Tugume Albert Cook Apuuli aged 33 years was shot dead by gunmen a few minutes past 8:00 PM on Thursday 21st Nov 2024 at his mobile money and agent banking shop on Ntinda Kiwatule Road (Muvule, central road),” said Nyanjura on her X platform.

“Cook attempted to take off from the gunmen but he could only run so far, the cowards shot him three times and took off with his bag containing the money, mobile agent lines and bank agent machines. The gunmen jumped on a waiting boda boda and took off!”

According to Nyanjura, a boda boda rider called Barnabas was shot while attempting to save her brother’s life. He was rushed to Mulago Hospital for treatment but passed on shortly after.

“Last Thursday, the country witnessed an incidence of gun violence in Ntinda, where two lives were lost,” said Among during Tuesday’s plenary, adding:

“Aware that security is a vital pre-condition for a meaningful socio-economic activity, I want to urge the security agencies to effectively tackle this criminality and bring those people to book. I want to urge the Government to interest itself in that issue.”

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer Kampala Metropolitan Police, said they are actively investigating the tragic incident.

“Police investigators promptly arrived at the scene and recovered critical evidence that will aid in the ongoing investigation. Additionally, a vehicle, registration number UBH 045H, was found damaged by stray bullets.”

“The Kampala Metropolitan Police remains committed to bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice. We urge members of the public with any information that could assist in the investigation to come forward,” said Owoyesigyire.

The body of Tugume was transported to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a post-mortem examination.

A church service for Albert Cook was held on Friday at 2:00 PM at St Luke Church Ntinda. He was later laid to rest on November 24, 2024, in Kyenjojo district.
