The so-called “National Environment Management Authority” has marked over 300 houses in Nakuwadde-Bbira and Ganda-Nasere for annihilation, shamelessly trampling on the basic human rights of the residents. People like Mr Mathias Kisitu, who built their homes on dry land, are being terrorized despite their structures being miles away from any wetlands. Nema’s refusal to provide clear boundaries is not just gross negligence; it’s a deliberate act of cruelty designed to instill fear.
Nema’s audacity is further exemplified by their cold-blooded reaction to the tragic deaths of residents like Magambo and Patrick Mugoya, who were driven to their graves by the trauma of impending homelessness. This callous disregard for human life is nothing short of murder under the guise of authority.
Local leaders like Mr Silas Kasaato are rightfully mobilizing residents to resist this despotic onslaught. The violent clashes with police, resulting in teargas and chaos, underscore the severity of the situation. Nema’s actions are pushing peaceful citizens to the brink of desperation and revolt, transforming ordinary people into radicals fighting for their very survival.
The financial devastation inflicted is equally appalling. Young entrepreneurs like Brian Kasumba and Nobert Akaheebwa, who invested their life savings into developing their properties, face total ruin. Their dreams and hard work are being bulldozed by a soulless, malevolent bureaucracy that couldn’t care less about their plight.
Nema’s spokesperson, Mr William Lubuulwa, had the audacity to halt the demolition exercise temporarily, as if that would placate the anger and grief of the affected residents. His empty promises of future communication are a grotesque mockery, a slap in the face to those who have lost everything to this reckless and sadistic campaign.
Even the most vulnerable, like 97-year-old Jacqueline Joyce Swende, are not spared. This despicable targeting of a nonagenarian refugee who built her home to escape conflict is a new low, showcasing Nema’s utter lack of empathy and basic human decency.
In Nabweru, the anxiety among residents and school proprietors is palpable as they face an uncertain future. Mr Lubuulwa’s patronizing advice for schools to negotiate for a grace period is a hollow and insulting gesture, coming from an organization that has demonstrated nothing but brutal insensitivity and sheer malevolence.
This entire fiasco stinks of ulterior motives and land-grabbing schemes. The government, led by President Museveni, must step in to stop this madness. Nema’s reckless actions are not about protecting the environment; they are about terrorizing innocent people and destroying their livelihoods for some dark, nefarious agenda.
