March 31, 2024 (KHARTOUM) – The Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces (Tagadum) issued a strong statement condemning sexual violence and disavowing a spokesperson’s remarks that downplayed the issue.
A controversy arose when Aladdin Nugud, a Tagadum spokesperson, reportedly suggested in a WhatsApp group, including journalists and activists, that rape allegations require physical evidence of resistance and medical examination. Critics viewed this as insensitive and dismissive of the atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Responding to a petition signed by over 100 women’s organizations and activists, Tagadum clarified its stance. It emphasized that Nugud’s comments were “purely personal” and did not reflect the coalition’s views. The statement also pointed out the positions of several coalition members who disagreed with the spokesman.
The statement stressed Tagadum’s firm condemnation of RSF-perpetrated rape and sexual violence. They advocate for holding perpetrators accountable and remain steadfast in supporting investigations into all war crimes.
The statement acknowledged the difficulties in obtaining medical care for victims and the societal stigma surrounding such crimes in Sudan. These factors contribute to the challenges in accurately documenting the number of victims.
Tagadum further emphasized, “Civilians have borne a heavy burden throughout the war. Ignoring or downplaying these atrocities is unacceptable.” The statement reiterated their strong support for the International Commission of Inquiry to investigate all war crimes committed by all parties to the conflict.
