Venerato Muhumuza, a 58-year-old police officer stationed at Kashambya police station in Rukiga district, western Uganda, has been further remanded over allegations of raping a suspect.

On January 17, 2022, while on duty at Kashambya police station, Muhumuza allegedly raped a 30-year-old female suspect, Caroline Kyatuheire, from Nyarubisi village, Kitanga parish, Kashambya sub-county.

Kyatuheire had been arrested for allegedly stealing Shs 1 million and a mobile phone from a mobile money agent. During the night hours, Muhumuza purportedly opened the police cells, took the female suspect, and brought her to his room where the alleged rape occurred.

Appearing before the court, Muhumuza was charged with rape, contravening sections 123 and 124 of the Penal Code Act.

Juliet Najunju, the Kabale resident district state attorney, requested an adjournment of the case, stating that crucial witnesses to implicate the accused were not present. Justice Samuel Emokor, a Kabale High Court judge, subsequently remanded Muhumuza to Ndorwa Government Prison until April 5th.
