Lango sub-region to host first Ambulance Dispatch Center

Lango sub-region is set to have its first Ambulance Dispatch Center, that will be stationed at Lira Regional Referral Hospital.

This was revealed by Mr. Peter Okello Odeke, the Principal Administrator of Lira Regional Referral Hospital, during a First Aid training organized by the Association of Ambulance Professionals (AAPU) in Lira City.

Mr. Okello noted that the Ambulance Dispatch Center will help in coordinating all the Ambulance and Emergency Services in the Lango Sub-region.

He added that with support from AAPU and the Ministry of Health, they have been able to hold a one week training for different categories of people Iike Scouts and girl-guide, VHTs, Police and Local leaders totaling to about 200 people.

Mr. Okello told Journalists that Lira Regional Hospital receives between 200-300 people weekly in the Emergency Ward, and the majority are traffic road crashes.

According to Mr. Ntambi Umaru, a trainer from the Association of Ambulance Professionals, they are working with the Ministry of Health to train various workers and people in the emergency medical services.

Umaru added that the main aim of the training is to sensitize and equip these people with skills needed in the emergency medical services, adding that they have also trained people in Central, Western and Westnile regions of Uganda.

Hon. Bonny Omara, the Lira District Vice Chairperson, applauded AAPU and the Ministry of Health for the training of local leaders in First Aid, saying that this will go along way in saving many lives.

Mr. Omara added that they should extend the training to more people in the region, so that they also benefit.

Under National Emergency Medical Services Policy and Strategy, the Ministry of Health plans to set up 16 Regional Ambulance dispatch centers across the Country.
