The competition to succeed the departed Dokolo Woman MP, Cecilia Ogwal, is intensifying with the entry of Dr. Esther Akullo Owor Otada Obot, a prominent Rotarian. Cecilia Ogwal secured the Dokolo Woman MP seat in the 2021 general elections with 32,223 votes. Akullo is expected to face competition from Dr. Rosemary Alwoc, Ogwal’s daughter, who is being supported by leaders within both the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Najjanankumbi faction.
Dr. Esther Akullo, aged 45, is running as an independent candidate with the goal of conducting an inclusive campaign, aiming to unite the people of Dokolo and be their voice within the Lango sub-region and nationally, regardless of political affiliations. Akullo has garnered support from influential figures in the sub-region with diverse political views. Although NRM has gained ground in Lango, Dokolo has traditionally leaned towards the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), making Akullo’s candidacy acceptable due to her father, David P Obot, being a staunch UPC supporter before Cecilia Ogwal shifted to FDC.
In addition to her political pursuits, Dr. Esther Akullo is active in various private initiatives, holding leadership roles in the Rotary movement and participating in business and the private sector, including coordinating the activities of Otada Group of Companies, involved in media, telecom, and commercial farming.
Other potential candidates for the Dokolo Woman MP seat include Dr. Anna Grace Lalam, Beatrice Milly Abang, Lillian Auma Okullo, UPC’s Sarah Aguti Nyangkon, and NRM’s Janet Rose Adong Elau. The FDC is also expected to field a candidate in the upcoming race. Before securing the Dokolo Woman MP position, Akullo will face competition from Dr. Alwoc Ogwal, based in the UK.
