February 2, 2024 (ROME) – A delegation from the SPLM-N – Revolutionary Democratic Current, a key group of Sudan’s pro-democracy coalitions (FFC and Tagadum), visited Rome this week to rally international support for ending the ongoing war in their country.
The three-day trip from (January 31 to February 2) aimed to highlight that the ongoing conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, now entering its tenth month, remains a pressing humanitarian crisis demanding global attention.
During the visit, the delegation led by Yasir Arman met with representatives from the Sant’Egidio Community, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vatican, and Italian media outlets. Discussions focused on the urgent need for a ceasefire, protection of civilians, and delivery of humanitarian aid.
The SPLM-N emphasized the crucial role of civil forces in achieving a peaceful and transparent solution, respecting the aspirations of the December Revolution and dismantling the remnants of the former regime. They briefed Italian and Vatican officials on the ongoing efforts to unify the opposition under the banner of the Democratic Civil Forces Coordination (Tagadum).
Their outreach proved successful, with many Italian institutions expressing support for anti-war initiatives and willingness to facilitate parliamentary hearings on the issue. The Vatican underscored its commitment to ending the conflict and alleviating human suffering.
The SPLM-N delegation concluded their visit by issuing a call to action for all Sudanese citizens, both within and outside the country, to unite in demanding an end to the war and a return to civilian rule. They urged participation in a global campaign to pressure the international community to take decisive action and support a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
