Last night, the Zimbaz (Class of 2006) emerged as the champions of the SMACK League’s sixth season after a thrilling title-decisive game at the Legends Rugby Grounds in Lugogo.
Sponsored by Guinness, the competition brings together alumni of St. Mary’s College Kisubi, one of the oldest schools in the country. The Zimbaz secured their title with a 3-2 win against Tsunamiz, with George Aporu securing the victory with a decisive goal.
Joseph Sixtus Kawooya, Chairman of Zimbaz, shared, “It was destined to be. The end-to-end action on the pitch kept everyone on the edge of their seats. We are more than proud to have taken home the trophy and grateful for the dedication of our team and the support of the fans.”
The Zimbaz started the season with wanting form, having finished 19th on the 20-team log in Season 5. They rebounded with a strong run of wins to secure the coveted title.
In addition to the championship, Zimbaz also received other accolades, including the Golden Glove, Coach of the Season, Most Improved Team, Networker of the Season, and Best Matchday Hosts.
Guinness, the official beverage sponsor of the league, contributed to the vibrant atmosphere of the finale. The afterparty featured a performance by Janzi Band and the sensational “Firebaby” Winnie Nwagi, who thrilled the crowd with hits like “Amaaso,” “Take It Slow,” “Fire Dancer,” and the recent hit “Okubye Nyo.” Guinness Brand Manager Roy Tumwizere expressed excitement about the success of the season and looked forward to another thrilling season.
