Initially slated for remand at Masindi prison, the suspects opted for Hoima prison citing security concerns. The suspects, along with others still at large, are believed to have conspired, coordinated, and executed the murder of Abiriga on January 7.

Abiriga sustained severe wounds to the neck, head, both hands, and back. Passersby discovered his body near his gate in Kijura North cell, Masindi. Cherotich was arrested in Masindi, while Namureng and Kipsang were apprehended in Bukwo district.

During a court appearance on January 16, Cherotich reportedly confessed to hiring hitmen for Shs 2.5 million to murder her husband, citing his repeated comparisons of her to other women.
