Uganda Police’s Counter Terrorism officers have defused an explosive at Entebbe Botanical Gardens.

“On January 23, 2024, at around 6:00 PM, the DPC of Entebbe Police Division led a prompt response team following reports of a suspected explosive device near Rolex Beach within the Botanical Gardens,” said Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire on Tuesday night.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the item is a non-spent ordnance buried underground for years, exposed due to soil erosion,” he added.

Owoyesigyire further said, “In the interest of public safety, meticulous inquiries were initiated, and the scene was thoroughly processed and documented. Following the guidance of bomb experts, a controlled explosion was executed on-site, resulting in zero injuries or damages.”

The discovery of the explosive caused unease in the lakeside town which also hosts the State House.

Cases of unexploded ordinances are rare in Entebbe.

However, dozens of people have been killed by such devices in the recent past in Northern Uganda which suffered from decades of conflict.

Owoyesigyire urged the public to “remain vigilant and report any suspicious items promptly, facilitating swift police response and ultimately saving lives.”
