The police have disclosed disturbing details surrounding the gruesome murder of Dr. Jino Abiriga Jino, the former District Health Officer of Masindi. Police spokesperson Fred Enanga revealed that the murder was not only premeditated but also involved a sinister plot orchestrated by the widow, Betty Cherotic, who allegedly hired contract killers for the heinous crime.
The investigation, conducted by the Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) in collaboration with regional police teams and the Flying Squad, unveiled a sinister plot that unfolded in multiple stages.
Enanga explained that the motive behind the murder stemmed from marital discord, jealousy, and suspicions of infidelity.
“The plot to murder the deceased began after Cherotic Betty learned about her husband’s second relationship with a lady called Atuhura Susan in Masindi,” Enanga told the media in Kampala on Monday.
He added, “She first hatched a plot to kill her co-wife, Atuhura Susan, and the first attempt was by setting fire to her house, which was put off by neighbors.”
“On December 26, 2023, Kipisang, along with the newly recruited Joshua Namureng, attempted to carry out the murder. However, the plan failed when the doctor woke up and closed the door Cherotic had left open for entry.”
Enanga detailed the events on January 6, where the suspects booked a room at Valentine’s Guest House, and during the night, Cherotic informed them that her husband was deep asleep. The assailants found the gate open, entered the bedroom, and attacked the victim while he was asleep. They struck him on the head with a hoe stick, dragged the body to the floor, and then slit the doctor’s throat.
The trio then cleaned the crime scene, dressed the deceased in new clothing, and dumped the body 50 meters away, outside the gate. The two male suspects disposed of bloodstained clothes in a pit latrine at Valentine’s Guest House, where they had stayed. They left Masindi Municipality on January 7, 2024, at 5:30 a.m for Bukwo.
All three suspects, including Cherotic, Kipisang, and Namureng, have admitted to their involvement in the murder. Enanga highlighted that they reconstructed the crime scenes, recovered several exhibits, and submitted samples for forensic analysis, which were retrieved from Bulyasojo cell. The police also recovered a bag from the latrine at Valentine’s Guest House, containing a pillow cover, a mopping rug, the deceased’s work ID, and several other bloodstained clothes.
