President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has emphasized the importance of unity and cautioned against divisionism in East Africa, considering it a setback for the region. He made these remarks during the 60th Zanzibar Revolution anniversary celebrations at the Amaan Sports Complex in Zanzibar on Friday, January 12, 2024. President Museveni was invited by H.E Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania.

The Zanzibar Revolution, occurring in January 1964, resulted in the overthrow of the Sultan of Zanzibar and his predominantly Arab government by the island’s majority Black African population. Zanzibar later united with Tanganyika in 1964, forming the United Republic of Tanzania.

President Museveni commended the idea of Zanzibar uniting with Tanganyika, echoing the proposition of Pan-Africanists like Mzee Julius Mwalimu Nyerere. He highlighted the significance of unity for Africa’s development, citing the success of the East African common market.

According to President Museveni, Africa’s progress depends on unity, and joining forces, as demonstrated by East Africa, leads to development through a common market.

President Hussein Ali Mwinyi of Zanzibar congratulated the people on reaching the 60th revolution anniversary, expressing gratitude to President Suluhu and neighboring countries, including Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda, for their continuous support.

President Suluhu, in her address, extended congratulations to the people of Zanzibar for achieving the milestone of commemorating the 60th anniversary.

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, acknowledging the historic day, remembered those who fought injustice, leading to the unity between Zanzibar and Tanganyika, resulting in the formation of the United Republic of Tanzania. He emphasized this as proof of Africa’s ability to come together to address its challenges.
