Sudanese army renews airstrikes on RSF in Khartoum, gains ground in Omdurman

January 10, 2024 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese army intensified its aerial bombardments against Rapid Support Forces (RSF) positions in Khartoum, simultaneously reclaiming control over several neighbourhoods in Khartoum’s twin city, Omdurman.

The intensity of clashes in Khartoum had recently subsided following nine months of conflict that claimed the lives of an estimated 12,000 civilians, according to local and international sources.

However, warplanes and drones launched fierce airstrikes on RSF sites along the strategic 60th Street, a crucial artery connecting key areas of the capital, on Tuesday and Wednesday. These strikes resulted in casualties and injuries.

On Tuesday night, both sides exchanged intense artillery fire near the Sports City and Jabra neighbourhoods in southern Khartoum.

This escalation comes as the RSF strengthens its presence in Al-Jazirah State (central Sudan) and expands its influence in West and South Kordofan.

The Sudanese army, in response, has embarked on a recruitment drive across the states it controls in the north, centre, and east of the country. This mobilization is being overseen by governors who have prioritized military recruitment within their respective administrative regions.

Meanwhile, Omdurman is witnessing fierce clashes between the army and support forces in various neighbourhoods, suggesting an attempt by the army to link its forces stationed in Karari (north) and Mohandiseen (south).

An eyewitness confirmed to Sudan Tribune that the army advanced along the axes of Omdurman Market and Popular Market, establishing outposts at the entrances to the Wad Nubawi, Al-Qamair, Al-Masalama, Arab, and Al-Omda neighbourhoods.

Another resident of Abbasiya reported that army forces entered the neighbourhood and took control of streets formerly occupied by RSF elements. Additionally, they stated that the army expanded its presence into the Abu Kaduk neighbourhood.

Over the past two days, the army launched attacks against RSF positions north of the Corps of Engineers in Omdurman, inflicting significant casualties.

However, eyewitnesses south of Omdurman indicated that the RSF maintains troops in the area and continues to shell the vicinity of the Corps of Engineers using launchers and long-range artillery shells.

Most neighbourhoods in Khartoum and Bahri are plunged into darkness due to power outages and face water shortages as many stations have ceased operations.

The remaining residents of the capital are grappling with dire and complex humanitarian conditions. The health sector and pharmacies have been destroyed and looted, disrupting access to essential medicines.

Residents are resorting to relying on relatives and acquaintances to bring medicines from neighbouring states, often undertaking perilous journeys to obtain these vital supplies.
