January 5, 2024 (KHARTOUM) – Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemetti,” the leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), met with Rwandan President Paul Kagame on a regional tour aimed at garnering international support for peacebuilding efforts in Sudan.

During their meeting, Hemetti briefed Kagame on the political and security situation in Sudan and the ongoing peace initiatives underway to resolve the country’s protracted conflict.

Hemetti’s visit comes as part of a broader diplomatic outreach to IGAD member states, AU Peace and Security Council members, and friendly countries to explain his position on resolving the conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF paramilitary forces.

President Kagame, reaffirming Rwanda’s steadfast commitment to Sudan’s peace process, expressed his country’s unwavering support for the ongoing dialogue and reconciliation efforts to end the hostilities between Sudan’s Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF.

He emphasized the importance of a political solution to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people and restore stability to the country.

Hemetti, who has previously visited Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa, expressed his gratitude for Rwanda’s support and highlighted the critical role regional leaders play in facilitating peacebuilding initiatives.

He expressed his hope for Rwanda’s continued engagement and assistance in helping Sudan overcome its current crisis and establish lasting peace.
