Two trains collided near the Indonesian city of Bandung on Friday morning, the country’s public railway operator said, and a local police chief said at least three people had been killed.

The accident in Rancaekek District, east of the city on the island of Java, was confirmed by Joni Martinus, a spokesman for Indonesian Railways, a state-owned company. Televised images showed mangled train carriages.

One train was a local commuter line, and the other was heading to Bandung from the city of Surabaya, officials said. Bandung’s police commissioner, Kusworo Wibowo, said in a televised interview that three crew members had died.

No other information, including the number of passengers on the trains, was immediately available. Kompas TV, an Indonesian television station, reported that emergency workers were preparing to evacuate the trains.

This is a developing story.
