Chief Justice, Alfonse Owiny-dollo Cigamoi, has urged Acholi religious leaders to unite together so that they can fight the increasing moral degeneration in Acholi sub-region.
The Chief Justice made the appeal on Thursday during the general meeting of Acholi people dubbed ‘’Gurre I Pondwongo“ at Sir Samuel Baker School in Pece, Laroo Division.
The CJ noted that there is a lot of moral degeneration that has cropped among the people in Northern Uganda, such as drunkenness, petty thefts, and gender-based violence among others, which he says can be dealt with through the various religious leaders.
Owiny-Dollo added that Acholi religious leaders’ peace initiative [ARLPI] played a very crucial role during the Peace Talk between the Government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army Rebels [LRA] that led to peace in Northern Uganda.
The Chief Justice further appealed to the people of Northern Uganda to always live in unity, truth and love among themselves, so that they can pull away from the vast majority of problems that are affecting the people of Acholi.
Responding to the CJ’s appeal, Archbishop of Gulu, John Baptist Odama welcomed the appeal, saying that as members of ARLPI, they are ready to address the challenge affecting the people of Acholi sub-region.
Odama added that they will united together in their different dominions, like the Anglicans, Muslims, Orthodox among others, so that they preach and pray for the people of Northern Uganda to have peace and unity among themselves.
During the Juba-Peace-Talks of 2006-2008 between the LRA and the Government of Uganda, religious leaders played a very critical role in advocating for the peaceful ending of the war that had lasted for over two decades in Northern Uganda.
