A 30-year-old man, Alifari Omaga, is currently on the run following the tragic death of his 24-year-old wife, Margret Mayo, in Nakawano village, Kizuba sub-county, Namutumba district.
According to local reports, the couple was frequently engaged in altercations, with a recent fight allegedly erupting over a sum of Shs 2000 on Monday morning. Omaga reportedly accused Mayo of infidelity, asserting that she failed to account for the origin of the money.
The situation escalated when Omaga suspected that the Shs 2000 was used for a lover’s meals in their damaged cooking pot, further fueling the dispute. In the early hours of Monday morning, a heated argument ensued, prompting Logose Esuka, the village women’s council chairperson, to intervene. After the intervention, Omaga temporarily left their home to cool down.
Upon his return, a struggle occurred, resulting in Mayo’s unfortunate demise. Omaga allegedly covered her lifeless body in their marital bed before fleeing into hiding. The discovery of Mayo’s body was made around 10:00 am by Esuka, who led area residents to check on her.
Isa Gulere, the area youth councilor, expressed concern about the couple’s history of fighting despite efforts from religious and local leaders to reconcile them. He highlighted the rising issue of domestic violence among young couples, attributing it to a lack of guidance from elders, many of whom come from broken families.
Diana Nandawula, the Busoga East police spokesperson, revealed preliminary autopsy findings indicating signs of strangulation and wounds on Mayo’s body, pointing to Omaga as the prime suspect. Nandawula emphasized the importance of patience among married couples to reduce the escalating levels of domestic violence within families. Authorities are actively pursuing Omaga, who is currently evading arrest.
