White house under lockdown over suspicious package
The White House was placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon as law enforcement officials investigate a suspicious package found on the outside of the north fence line, according to the U.S. Secret Service.
The Secret Service said that at about 1:15 p.m. pedestrians and others were cleared from the area along Pennsylvania Avenue between 15th and 17th St and LaFayette Park. A spokesman declined to comment further.
The incident comes a few minutes after police found a suspicions package at 1:10 p.m. on the Rotunda steps of the U.S. Capitol.
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Capitol Police said no hazards were found, but a man was arrested and charged with unlawful entry; the steps are off-limits to the public.
