VIDEO: Atuhirwe Carol is a cancer patient in Mulago – she just died
The pain. Such pain. Did you ever feel pain?
It is impossible to love a country and return to it when it does not have medical care. Below is an article I wrote about Carol. BUT maybe we should not cry. Maybe her death is to tell us the system is broken.
Carol is suffering from throat and lung cancers and needs to travel to US for better treatment.
Over the weekend, reports circulated that government had withheld Carol’s travel documents pending a meeting of the medical team today, Tuesday.
In a statement, the ministry says alternative medication has been suggested as Carol’s condition is being monitored in the meantime.
“The Ministry of Health would like to clarify to the public about the case of Ms. Carol Atuhairwe. We have neither refused nor delayed approval of any paperwork for the said patient and to-date, the Medical Board has not received any documents to this effect.”
Information from the Cancer Institute where Carol has been receiving treatment for the last two years indicates that a multidisciplinary team of Uganda Cancer Institute met with visiting surgeons from USA and concluded that her condition requires close care as it is very delicate and this can be currently handled by the Uganda Cancer Institute, the ministry said.
“Since the initial medical team from USA can no longer carry out surgery on Carol, the Institute is working on finding an alternative international health facility to handle her case.”
Once this is secured, it said, her request for referral will then be generated and forwarded to the Medical Board.
“Government remains committed to support Carol in a timely manner especially if need for any approval arises. We appeal to the public to avoid spreading any misleading information.”
The above was published on the Nangalama blog in 2016 when Uganda was fundraising to send Carol to Ohio for treatment. My editor at The Insider is related to Carol. We had to forego a lot not to publicize Carol. When the #UgandaNewsBriefing group said Carol had died, I did not believe them. I called my Editor. He just confirmed that his sister indeed died.
Non. There will not be peace. It is impossible. Ugandans are dying. Who even cares? But we are so worn out from burying people daily. Do I ever wish that Carol had made it. Only so to give us a tiny bit of hope. AND people say we should return to Uganda and build the nation. But how can we build the nation when we are dying daily?
Sleep sister. Rest in the arms of the angels. We will manage somehow. We will miss you tremendously but be assured that we will work hard to get the medical system working. I wish God would have chosen another.
