CHIMP REPORTS – The inspector general of police Okoth Martin Ochola has said the escalating kidnaps in the country are committed by individuals with intent to solicit funds to finance terrorism.

On Wednesday, while delivering the state of national security at the police headquarters in Naguru, Ochola said the current spate of kidnaps and murders according to police analysis are committed with four intentions by the perpetrators.

Among the intentions according to the police boss include kidnap and murders by individuals who are soliciting money to facilitate terrorism activities in the country.

“For example the late Suzan Magara was murdered by individuals suspected to be terrorists,” Ochola said

Police, he said, has arrested eight suspects in connection with the murder and that their files are ready for prosecution in courts of law.

He added that the other motives of kidnapers include kidnap for ritual purposes, crimes for passion and also fake kidnaps by individuals who want to extort money from relatives.

According to the IGP, Police has since February registered 42 kidnap cases across the country.

Ochola said that among the cases, seven of them involved murder amounting to eight victims.

He revealed that twenty of the cases are fake kidnaps but also police rescued victims from eight cases registered by the agency.

The IGP also disclosed that police is currently hunting for victims from seven cases who remain missing.

Ochola however assured the nation that police has intensified on its operations through joint operations with sister security agencies like CMI and JATT.

Police has also established a 24/7 kidnap emergency centre at the police headquarters in Naguru.

Ochola also issued toll free numbers on which the public can call and report kidnaps and murders.

The toll free numbers are 0800199990, 0800199991 and 0800199992.

“We have also intensified covert intelligence operations to deter more crimes.” Said Ochola
