The biggest challenge with individuals holding onto political power isn’t the loss of democracy. It is the personalising of the state. Because the current regime’s main concern is to stay in power, everything government institution’s main aim is to please Gen. Museveni, not serve the people. As a result, there is no coherent policy framework.
Today, the army is the solution to agriculture, tomorrow, it is the one that messed up Operation Wealth Creation.
Today, we are investing in car manufacturing with the view of starting production in 2018, tomorrow the budgetary approvals for this have not even taken place.
Instead of plugging excessive government expenditure, corruption and widening the tax base by being more accountable to the people, this government seems to think the best way forward is to milk every sector dry.
In the meantime, mothers die giving birth, hospitals and schools are ill-equipped, health workers and teachers poorly remunerated, and money for political favours quickly found.
This is what happens when we fail to put #CountryBeforeSelf
It is up to you and me to do whatever we can to reverse this trend. And for many of us, that starts with making it clear to politicians that their actions have consequences at the ballot.
