UGANDA: Ebola like disease outbreak in Mubende Disctrict – Ministry of Health
Kampala – 03/ 08/2018 -The Minjstry of Health wishes to inform the public that it is investigating a “strange disease” in Mubende District. This illness began on the 1st of July 2018 with investigations showing that a 14 year old male succumbed to symptoms of Headache and Vomiting on the night of 1st July 2018 and died on the 02/ 08/ 2018.
According to surveillance and laboratory reports, 16 suspected cases have so far been reported with 8 deaths within Kibalinga Subcounty, Kabowa parish, in villages of Kalezi, Kayembe, Sunga and Kasambya. 7 samples were picked for analysis at the Uganda Virus Research institute. Five patients were isolated in Mubende hospital and their condition is stable.
Samples sent lo Lhe laboratory have all tested negative for the known Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers i.e Ebola, Rift Valley fever, Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic fever, Marburg and yellow fever.
National Health Laboratory Services (NILS) teams have tested blood, carried out stool cul ture, urine-analysis and other rapid tests like malaria and hepatitis 8. So far all tests are negative.
However, the Ministry of Health is still .investigating this strange disease and has also gone ahead to send some samples to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention collaborating laboratory in Atlanta, U.S.A, and the public will be informed when defin ite diagnosis has been reached.
The Ministry of Health with support Crom partn ers is und ertaking a number of measures to control the spread of the disease, including;
• A surveillance team has been dispatched to the field to conduct epidemiology description, active case search in the commun ities and health facilities, contact tracing and follow up
• An isolation facility has been established in Mubende Regional Referral Hospital for containmen t and close monitorin g of suspected cases. Two ambulances have been sent aside to pick patients from the commu nity.
• A case managemen t team is conducting clinical investigation, and treatment of cases.
• A social mobilization team headed by the Resident District Commissioner is conducting community sensitization, com munity education and health education
