Former Buyende District Police Commander, ASP Muhammad Kirumira, on Tuesday raised dust in Naguru when he tried to storm out of police court.

Kirumira returned to court from Railway Police Station where he has been on remand since last week.

He was arrested by the Flying Squad Police Unit (FSU) and charged with scandalous conduct, extortion, corruption, unlawful exercise of authority and discreditable conduct before the police disciplinary court.

On Tuesday, Kirumira applied for bail but court said it would only be granted if he presented two senior police officers above his rank.

He was ordered to report to the Police Profession Standards Unit (PSU) every day.

Police also confiscated his phones ensuring there was no way he could call the said superiors to stand surety for him.

Angered by what he termed harsh bail conditions, Kirumira tried to march out of court.

According to Kirumira, going to PSU every morning would jeopardise his personal work.

“I don’t want to be intimidated by police. This is Uganda. We have a constitution,” Kirumira said while battling officers in court.

In an ensuing scuffle with police officers, Kirumira was re-arrested and whisked away to Nalufenya detention facility in Jinja District.

Police had opted to grant him bail but later cancelled citing ill-behaviour.

Meanwhile, police said it was investigating an alleged attack on his wife, Mariam Kirumira, last week.

Mariam was attacked by two assailants wearing sunglasses and T-shirts at Busega roundabout as she headed to Railway Police Station in Kampala to check on her husband.

Thugs once again attacked her home in Gogonya, Bulenga in Wakiso District.
