UGANDA: Celebrities who endorsed Development Channel
By DAILY MONITOR (SQOOP)
If it is too good to be true… it is probably a fraud. Early this year, a new ponzi scheme was allover social media and local television channels.
Dubbed Development Channel, the scheme was ran under the guise of a poverty alleviation company aimed at empowering Africans with a lifetime payment.
The deal was a juicy one. Clients paid a sum of 270$ (about Shs1m) for a ‘No Drop Out tablet’, and were promised a monthly payment of $100 (about Shs380, 000) for the rest of their lives.
To make it even more attractive to the local clientele, managers of the company enrolled known celebrities to promote their scheme.
But after conning millions of shillings from unsuspecting clients, the Director of the scheme was this morning arrested at Jinja Road Police station, as he tried to flee the country.
This was the second time the 44-year-old suspect was arrested, in a period of four months.
He was first arrested on August 23, 2018 by Police at Kira Road Station after angry employees from various transport companies tried to set ablaze one of the premises owned by Development Channel and also trying to lynch him over their unpaid arrears.
Shock befell the angry clients when they found out that the Bukoto based Development Channel offices had been closed down and all properties sold out.
Ms Sharon Nakkazi, 24, a marketeer told police that she paid a sum of 270$ for a ‘No Drop Out tablet’ in January 2018 and was promised a guaranteed monthly payment of US$ 100 for the rest of her life, but had received nothing in 10 months hence opening up a case of obtaining money by false pretence vide SD REF 64/21/09/2018.
“In a verbal statement, the suspect stated that his company has been paying off money to old members through the cash injected by new recruits,” KMP say in the statement.
Police say that they receive over 200 complaints on Tuesday via various Police stations including; Jinja Road, Kira Road, Katwe and CPS Kampala with people requesting for police intervention in recovering their lost monies.
A case vide GEF 07/2018 was opened up at Jinja Road Police Station to investigate the claims by various complainants and the first case case vide GEF 30/2018 is still under inquiry at Kira Road Division, plus other isolated cases at various police stations in Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The suspect is currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station.
These are the celebrities who endorsed the scam
For long brands have used celebrities to enhance awareness, purchase behavior and advertisement credibility. Development Channel believed in this too.
Roger Mugisha, Richard Tuwangye, Patrick Salvador
One of their promo videos featured media personality Roger Mugisha, comedians Richard Tuwangye and Patrick Salvador Idringi.
The ad portrayed Tuwangye as a broke hustler struggling with rent, Salvador as a rich man living in a fancy apartment, while Mugisha was a landlord. Salvador, explains how he got his financial security through investing in development channel.
The trio later posted individual videos of themselves, explaining how much they paid to get a tablet and how much they earned monthly.
On July 7th, Sheilah Gashumba shared her excitement on Facebook. In a very long post, she told fans of how she had signed and sealed a deal to be a Development Channel brand ambassador.
