HEALTH FOCUS: Understanding pre-eclampsia and its risk factors

Pre-eclampsia or eclampsia is a pregnancy disorder characterized by high blood pressure and a large amount of protein in the urine. The disorder usually occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy and worsens over time. Mild pre-eclampsia affects 5 – 10% of all registered pregnancies in the country and 1% turns out fatal. Though the trigger is not clearly identifiable, damaged blood vessels, immune system problems and insufficient uterine blood flow are possible causes. World pre-eclampsia day is observed on May 22 every year and is dedicated to creating awareness about this hypertensive disorder. Pre-eclampsia affects 76,000 mothers and 500,000 babies, who lose their lives each year worldwide.
