English is the number one international language – perfect it

It is shocking to find that most Ugandan elite, I mean our university-and-higher-institution-of-learning-bred youth, are quite offended by corrections aimed at their English grammar.

There’s a gazillion grammatical errors especially in posts on social media but I guess this extends to even professional reports, manuscripts and the like. Even if we never get to see these on a daily.

Instead of writing ‘lack’ someone writes ‘luck’. Punctuations, correct spellings are long-lost. We are so used to deciphering the message out of a jumble of incoherent words that it now seems ‘business as usual’.

But it’s not. These imperfections are some of the reasons why some never get employed even after applying ten or so times. Would you employ someone who can’t write an application in right English?

This growing inability is a symptom, an effect of the wider degeneration of our education systems. And it can only get worse for UPE just started. USE is still a baby.

Still astounding is how the same people will say English is not their mother tongue, which we all know. Then, why is it that most of them don’t know even their mother tongues well enough?

English is the number one international language, so please perfect your use and comprehension of it. That is if you intend to have an impact beyond your village (LC1).

PS. My grammar also stands to be corrected. You know these things, especially mediocrity, are contagious.
